NOISE COLOURS

I read something the other day about pink noise. I have never heard of this...

I know a bit about white noise as when J was younger I had read about it and even downloaded a white noise album to help aid sleep when she was very very young. It had the sound of a whirring fan on it, I think a washing machine and maybe even a Hoover, can't quite remember as so long ago now.

In white noise, the power is constant, but in pink noise, as the numbers get bigger, the difference in power becomes smaller, so the higher-pitched sounds are softer, less abrasive and can lead to a better night's sleep....apparently!

There are other colours of noise, including brown noise (even more low-frequency than pink noise, like thunder rumbling) and blue noise (emphasizes the higher frequencies instead of the lower ones, like water hissing out of a spout). Who knew .... not me!

According to many studies pink noise has been found to be the most soothing background sound. Not only that, studies have also shown that going to sleep listening to pink noise from a sound machine helps improve memory the next day and could have long-lasting positive effects on memory and concentration!
