MASKING

You could say that everyone makes small adjustments to fit in better or conform to social norms, but camouflaging/masking often calls for constant and elaborate effort. You can imagine how draining this must be for your child, and how their anxiety levels can rise with the pressure they put themselves under to hold everything together. The Lost Girls The Internet seems to coin the phrase the 'lost girls' because girls can tend to be overlooked or diagnosed later in life. They might not understand what’s going on, but they are very good at "masking", hence problems may not show up until later in their school life, or even into adulthood. SMALL TALK

Earlier this year at our first Paediatric appointment, we were asked if J initiated any type of conversation, like pointing things out in the car, asking how our day was etc. To our absolute surprise we realised that she didn't do that and still doesn't now. It upsets me a bit to think we missed that, but it just was something we never realised until asked. I remember one time she wanted to ring her friend, but when her friend answered, J had no idea what to say, it was painful to watch and I found myself prompting her with possible questions. However, once on a subject she loved, she talked non stop! Challenges Small talk sounds easy enough, but it can be a challenge for those who struggle with social communication. A two-way conversation can quickly end in awkward silence, embarrassment or can become totally one-sided. It might be a tad boring, but you will get far greater engagement by sticking to a topic your child loves. I also find it better to never force the conversatio...

MOOD SWINGS

It’s not uncommon for a child with autism to experience frequent mood swings. J has them regularly. Sometimes the mood swing will result in a meltdown, sometimes not. Her overwhelming emotions just take over, and at that point in time she will use some type of coping mechanism to deal with them. The triggers are not always easy to spot, let alone stop! It may be something incredibly minor (to me at least) or something on a bigger scale and much more upsetting! With the bigger scale situation this, in our case, will usually involve destroying or throwing objects, serious aggression, anger and complete red mist rage. Often with no build up at all!! No warning! There's really not much we can do at this point except to ensure she is safe and just wait it out. For us, offering a cuddle or something will just totally infuriate her.
