Today we had a short notice appointment with the Community Paediatrician.
Along with our recent ADHD diagnosis for J through CAMHS, we now have an ASD diagnosis with PDA (pathalogical demand avoidance) traits.
The Paediatrician explained that although J doesn't fit the 'whole' criteria for ASD, her PDA is definite but could only be diagnosed alongside ASD as PDA is not currently recognised as a stand alone diagnosis.
In fact. we have read that some consultants will not even entertain its very existence, so we feel very lucky in this respect.
The Ripple Effect
I'm not sure how I am feeling at this moment. Some people say that receiving a diagnosis is like throwing a pebble into a pond. The ripples most affect the immediate family, then extended family, friends, school and the community.
Mainly I am relieved that we finally have a diagnosis, as J's issues have pretty much stemmed from pre-school. Although not overly significant in the beginning, behaviour has certainly escalated as she has grown up.
There have been times where we have doubted our parenting abilities and I will be honest, there have been times where I in particular have just wanted to give up on life, being pushed to the absolute brink, whilst trying to cope with my own mental health problems.... but here we are... a day to remember for sure.
We no doubt have lots to learn about ASD, ADHD and PDA, but most importantly the focus is, and always will be, love, patience (lots of!) and understanding.
