TESTS

Below are the tests with have had for J up to now.

EEG Test

Used to find problems related to electrical activity of the brain. An EEG tracks and records brain wave patterns. The results came back fine for J.

S A.L.T. (Speech & Language Therapy)

Quite an involved session with the report showing J having a very high score of inferential comprehension (the ability to infer information about a scenario consisting of a single complex picture and a short description), however a lower score on sentence comprehension, this assesses her ability to understand sentences of increasing length and complexity and sentences containing specific concepts relating to time, space and emotion!

Whilst the report indicated all her scores were within the expected range for her age, there were a few disparities.

Overall it is likely that J will need extra time to process information.

The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC)

This is an individually administered test of a young person's intellectual ability and cognitive strengths and weaknesses.

The WISC-V is made up of 16 sub tests including working memory and processing speed, verbal comprehension and fluid reasoning to name but a few.

The report is massively in depth and took a long time to wade through, but in a nutshell J's verbal comprehension was 99th percentile with the other sub tests being pretty high too.

However her processing speed scored extremely low (same as on the SALT report!). We were told although the score for processing was very low for her age, it reflected her style of responding rather than her ability.

Overall ability is in the very high range with a percentile of 97, meaning that out of her age matched peers, only 3% would score higher than her).

I think J really enjoyed these tests and there was a lovely comment at the end of the report which said:

"It was a pleasure completing this assessment with J, she is a delightful young
lady and coped with the process extremely well".

In summing up, I think another possible delay in getting the final final diagnosis for J is that kids with autism generally struggle with inferential comprehension, whereas she scored very highly!
